Nutrition labels tell you all the details you need to know to make smart choices. Surprisingly, not many protein bars are actually healthy.
1 – amount of protein
Simply put, the best protein bars contain at least 20 grams of protein. As the name suggests, a protein bar should actually contain a lot of protein. It doesn’t make sense to call blanched cookies a protein bar because they contain some soy protein.
Studies have shown that 20 grams of protein is the optimal amount for muscle synthesis. Any less and your muscles won’t grow either. Less isn’t useful because your muscles won’t be able to use it effectively.
Another study compared how hungry people felt after eating yogurt snacks with different levels of protein. Those who ate yogurt with lower protein content (eg, or 5 g) felt hungry much faster than those who ate foods with high protein content (14 g or 24 g). The highest amount of protein helped subjects feel fuller and stayed longer before eating dinner.
Unsurprisingly, many protein bars don’t actually contain as much protein due to their higher cost.
2 – Choose Whey Protein
A look at the history of protein supplement development shows that whey protein is by far the best choice and is now available in three forms. They use basic whey protein and casein (both found in milk) in their best protein bars. Lower quality bars use plant-based soy protein as a filler to increase protein levels, but not quite as good. I use it because it’s a cheaper source. The more quality protein you find, the more seriously manufacturers take their products.
3 – More grams of protein than carbs
Because protein bars are classified as food, you should consume more than just protein. To be the best protein bar you need more protein than any other ingredient.
The second most common component is carbohydrates, which the body needs to replace glycogen as an energy source. A common one is sugar alcohol, which can cause gastrointestinal problems in some individuals. Most skimpy bars look like candy bars because they contain more of the bad carbs sugar and artificial sweeteners.
A really good addition to the best protein bars is fiber, especially if it’s a prebiotic super fiber (inulin).
4 – Not all fat is bad
Fat has the highest number of calories per gram of any edible substance. As a meal replacement, you should look for a protein bar of 10 grams or more. Most bars have the same amount and type, so there is no big difference here. Manufacturers have not yet started maximizing fat content. But don’t worry. Sooner or later all the research on the benefits of fat will.
